Niti Aayog's Atal Tinkering Labs

Atal Tinkering Labs is a science education initiative by the Niti Aayog. The project is supposed to reach 500 schools, at least 25% of which have to be government schools.

The objective of the labs seem to be to give children DIY science kits, "innovation skills" and space for experimentation. What this means precisely is unclear. But selected schools will get a 10 lakh grant for capital expenses and then 10 lakhs every year for five years to meet operational costs.

Apparently 13,000+ schools have applied - 257 have been selected. The first 10 schools were in partnership with Intel India.

The full list of schools is here. I recognise none of the schools here except for Amrita.

They announced a workshop for all schools to be held in Feb but this has been postponed. As of Feb 10th, the tender for supply of the DIY kits and other equipment is still open and so it can be assumed that the schools have received nothing yet. The tender does state that the principals of the 257 selected schools will be on the committee that approves the tender - which is a nice touch and implies that the sequence of events is all part of the plan.
